Injectables & Fillers New York

At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we specialize in a variety of cosmetic injectables and dermal fillers designed to help smooth wrinkles, restore lost volume, and reduce the signs of aging in the face, neck, and hands.

Procedure

As we grow older, the appearance, tone, and texture of our skin are affected by both intrinsic and external factors.  Aging skin produces less of the natural proteins and sugars that help to keep the skin looking young and healthy.  At the same time, environmental factors and lifestyle choices (such as sun damage and smoking), can hasten the breakdown of key skin components.  Over time, once abundant stores of collagen (which provides structural support and firmness), elastin (which provides elasticity), hyaluronic acid (which helps to keep the skin hydrated), and natural fat (which provides youthful fullness) are slowly depleted.  As the skin becomes thinner, dryer, and less elastic, it will begin to sag, allowing wrinkles and deep creases to form.  Areas of lost volume can make the face appear hollow and gaunt, and once smooth transition zones between the eyes, cheeks, nose, and lips can become more pronounced as soft tissue volume dissipates.

Cosmetic injectables can help temporarily reduce the signs of aging in the skin, leaving you looking younger and more refreshed.  There are a wide variety of cosmetic injectables that work in different ways to help smooth lines and wrinkles, while replacing lost structure and volume.  These include:

  • Neurotoxins (BOTOX® , Dysport®, and XEOMIN®), which relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers (Perlane®, Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Belotero®, Voluma™ XC), which help to restore lost volume
  • Collagen stimulators (Sculptra®, RADIESSE®), which help to restore the underlying structure of the skin
  • Autologous injections (Natural Fat, LAVIV™), which replace natural fat and fibroblasts, respectively, to restore youthful fullness and skin structure

Ideal Candidate

Not only do the various fillers work differently, they may also be best suited for injection in different facial areas, as well as at diverse depths.  Understanding when and where to use specific fillers is vital to achieving the best results.  As a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in cosmetic dermatology and facial rejuvenation, Dr. Jody Levine understands not only how each filler works individually, but also how they can be used synergistically as part of advanced layering techniques to provide the most youthful and natural-looking results.  For example, Dr. Levine may elect to use one filler in the deep dermis to provide structural foundation, another in the mid-dermis to replace lost volume, and a superficial filler to help smooth away surface lines and wrinkles.  Dr. Levine will meet with you to discuss your goals and help you determine the filler, or combination of fillers, best suited to your specific needs.

Treatment Areas

Cosmetic injectables can be used in a wide variety of places for effective facial contouring and rejuvenation.  Certain fillers may also be used to reduce the signs of aging in the lips and hands.  Some common treatment areas include:

  • Glabellar lines (vertical lines between the brows)
  • Nasolabial folds (“parenthesis lines” between the nose and mouth)
  • Peri-orbital lines (around the eyes)
  • Temporal hollows (on the temples)
  • Tear trough/nasojugal groove
  • Nasal defects
  • Malar enhancement (upper cheeks)
  • Nasal tip
  • Full facial filling (to combat lipoatrophy)
  • Submalar (lower cheeks)
  • Marionette lines
  • Lips
  • Radial lip lines
  • Lip border
  • Chin
  • Acne or trauma scarring
  • Oral commissure (sides of mouth)
  • Mental crease (between lips and chin)
  • Jaw line contouring
  • Hands

While most cosmetic injectables may be used in many of these areas, the chart below indicates the most common treatment areas for each injectable.  Many of the common treatment areas mentioned in the chart describe off-label uses.
