JUVÉDERM® TREATMENT
Juvederm® Treatment New York
Aging and sun damage can reduce the amount of natural hyaluronic acid in your skin. Hyaluronic acid helps to keep the skin hydrated, supple, and youthful looking. When hyaluronic acid is depleted, the skin can lose structure and volume, resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds. Treatment with Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is a non-surgical, safe, and simple way to reduce the signs of aging by replacing lost hyaluronic acid, while smoothing facial wrinkles.
What is Juvéderm® and how does it work?
Juvéderm® is an FDA-approved cosmetic filler made from hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar. Juvéderm® is injected into the mid to deep dermis using an ultra-fine needle. The smooth-consistency gel will help fill in and soften wrinkles, while providing fullness to areas of diminished volume.
What is the difference between Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus?
Juvéderm® is available in two formulations. Juvéderm® Ultra is effective in contouring and volumizing superficial facial wrinkles and folds, while Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is a more robust formula suited for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and creases. Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is a thicker version of Juvéderm®, equivalent to Perlane®’s relationship to Restylane®.
What is the difference between Juvéderm® and Restylane®?
Juvéderm® is more concentrated than Restylane® and contains a higher concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, making it smoother and easier to inject. For some patients, this translates into a smoother, more natural feel, with results that may last slightly longer than Restylane®. Given its smooth texture, Juvéderm® is a wonderful filler for use in the lips and nasolabial folds.
What areas can be treated with Juvéderm®?
Juvéderm® is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth, including smile lines, marionette lines, and vertical creases above and around the lips. Juvéderm® may also be used off-label to plump the lips and reduce dark circles beneath the eyes, as well as to provide youthful definition to the chin and cheeks, and a non-surgical browlift.
Is Juvéderm® safe and are there any possible side effects?
Juvéderm® has a well-defined safety profile and is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds. Juvéderm® is made from non-animal-based hyaluronic acid, limiting any risk of an allergic reaction or animal- based disease transmission. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is found naturally within the body and is fully biocompatible. No allergy testing is required prior to treatment.
Side effects from Juvéderm® are typically mild and rare. Temporary redness and swelling at the injection site is possible. These effects typically resolve within a few days and can be covered with makeup if desired.* Before your treatment, Dr. Levine will discuss with you any possible side effects and answer any questions that you may have about safety.
Who should administer Juvéderm®?
Juvéderm® injections are best administered by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon with an understanding of proper technique and safety. Both Dr. Jody Levine and Dr. Elie Levine have years of experience in administering Juvéderm® and would be happy to answer your questions about whether Juvéderm ® is right for you.
How long will the results last?
The results from Juvéderm® are immediately visible and last for approximately 6 months, while the results from Juvéderm® Ultra Plus last approximately 9 months. Juvéderm® Ultra placed under the eyes can last up to a year or more.*
Can the effects be reversed if desired?
Yes. All hyaluronic acid fillers may be quickly dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Though it is very rarely requested, first-time patients may feel more comfortable knowing that the effects can be reversed quickly, easily, and safely, usually within 24 hours.
Can Juvéderm ® be combined with other procedures?
Yes. Various fillers and other cosmetic injectables, such as BOTOX®, are often used concurrently to treat a variety of facial areas. Additionally, different types of fillers can be used synergistically as part of advanced layer techniques. For example, Dr. Levine may elect to use one filler in the deep dermis to provide structural foundation, another in the mid-dermis to replace lost volume, and a superficial filler to help smooth away surface lines and wrinkles. Juvéderm ® may also be used in combination with laser treatments or other procedures for even better results. Dr. Levine will discuss with you what procedure or combination of procedures may best suit your specific needs.
How can I prepare for Juvéderm ® treatment?
During your initial consultation, Dr. Levine will thoroughly discuss your goals and expectations, including possible risks and the best way to prepare for your treatment. As much as possible, patients should avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen-containing products (such as Advil and Motrin), St. John’s Wort, high doses of vitamin E supplements, and other blood thinners (unless medically necessary) for 1 week prior to treatment in order to minimize the risk of bruising. Patients should also avoid red wine and multivitamins for 2 days prior to treatment.
What should I expect during treatment?
Juvéderm® treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in our offices. The procedure is quick and simple, with minimal discomfort. During the procedure, Juvéderm® will be injected into the treatment area using an ultra-fine needle. A topical or local anesthetic may be used to increase patient comfort. An anesthetic can be added to the product as well. You can resume your normal activities immediately following treatment.*
What should I expect after treatment?
Mild swelling and bruising is possible, but not always present, for a few days following treatment. This depends on the location treated and the amount of filler that is needed. You may take Tylenol for discomfort if there is any, but don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen, which may increase bruising. Anti-bruising products containing Arnica Montana and Bromelain are offered and topical care discussed. Dr. Levine will determine which aftercare product is right for you. After treatment, patients may also choose to have LED therapy, which is known to significantly improve healing time and decrease inflammation.
