Vitiligo Psoriasis Hair Loss

New advances in laser technology present exciting treatment options for difficult and chronic conditions like vitiligo and psoriasis. Laser therapy has also shown promise in helping to treat hair loss called alopecia areata.
Treatment
Vitiligo is a condition in which skin cells stop producing melanin in localized areas. This causes a complete loss of pigmentation, resulting in white patches on the skin. While vitiligo affects all races, it may be more noticeable in people with darker skin. Topical and oral medications can be used to treat vitiligo, but some cases require light therapy (phototherapy). The Excimer laser delivers a single ray of light to re-pigment the skin. It is safer than traditional phototherapy because it can be directed only at the affected area. A combination of laser therapy and topical or oral agents can encourage significant re-pigmentation in the skin, eliminating or reducing the appearance of the white patches. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on your condition, but usually a series of approximately 12 treatments will give the best results.*
Lasers
Psoriasis is a common and chronic condition in which skin cells grow too quickly, resulting in thick, scaly patches on the skin. There is no cure for psoriasis, but laser and light therapy can help control psoriasis by inducing and prolonging the length of remissions for people who suffer from psoriasis. A series of 10 to 15 treatments, followed by periodic touch-up treatments, will usually bring about the best results. It is a safer alternative to traditional phototherapy and can be aimed directly at the lesions. It can be used in combination with topical and oral medications as well.*
Hair Loss
Alopecia areata, a form of hair loss, is an autoimmune disorder. There is a theory that by fighting against certain immune cells (T-lymphocytes) leading to this disease, the Excimer laser can, along with other therapies, speed recovery.*
Expectations
Laser treatment for vitiligo, psoriasis, and alopecia is performed on an outpatient basis in our offices. Patients do not feel any discomfort during the procedure, and anesthesia is not necessary. You may return to your normal activities immediately following treatment.*
