Lessen the Appearance of Stretch Marks in New York
Stretch marks are often an unavoidable side effect from pregnancy, but they can also result from hormonal changes and significant weight fluctuations. While there are a number of creams and ointments on the market that claim to improve the appearance of stretch marks, these have met with marginal to no success. New advancements in lasers and light technology have allowed us to improve the appearance of both early, red stretch marks, as well as mature, white stretch marks, which have been traditionally harder to treat.
How do lasers treat stretch marks?
Although no treatment can make stretch marks disappear completely, a combination of different lasers and light-based therapies may be used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks on the skin. Lasers are most effective on newer stretch marks that are still red in color.* Laser energy can target and help reduce red pigmentation, making the stretch mark look more similar to the skin surrounding it. Older stretch marks are characterized by both a whitening and thinning of the skin. A combination of laser and light-based therapy can treat white stretch marks by emitting light that encourages the skin to produce more natural pigmentation (melanin), by inducing collagen production, and by firming the surrounding skin. These changes can lessen the appearance of stretch marks.
What should I expect during laser stretch mark treatment?
Laser stretch mark treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in our offices. Depending on the laser used, the procedure involves either no anesthesia and no pain, or topical numbing cream and a slight snapping sensation. You may resume your normal activities immediately following treatment.*
What kind of results can I expect from laser stretch mark treatment?
No treatment can reduce stretch marks completely, but laser therapy can help make stretch marks look less noticeable. Although all patients will show some improvement, treatment results will vary from patient to patient.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of sessions needed will vary, depending on the age and prevalence of the stretch marks. Older stretch marks usually require more treatments to achieve the best results. Dr. Levine will assess your condition and determine the best treatment schedule for your specific needs.
